"Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" took home the Ub Iwerks Award, a jury prize, for technical achievement. Ian Mackinnon and Pete Saunders, who created the film's character models, also were in from England to receive the honors for their ingeniously machined face controls, a process Burton called the "Swiss watch" of stop-motion animation.

For the man who is credited for giving shape, movement, and personality to Mickey Mouse , Ub Iwerks became a pioneer in animation and helped launch one of the biggest industries in popular culture. In honor of the man who defined a generation of moviegoers and animation fans, the Ub Iwerks Award was created and given to individuals or companies for technical advancements that make a significant impact on the art or industry of animation. 

Past recipients of this award include Dr. Ed Catmull for his breakthrough technologies at Pixar ,  Scott Johnston for his innovative work in Looney Tunes: Back in Action , Digital Domain, Inc. for their groundbreaking innovations in Titanic , and Eric Daniels for the development of the 'Deep Canvas' process for Walt Disney's Tarzan .

To continue the tradition of honoring excellence in technical achievement, the recipient of the 2005 Ub Iwerks Award is being presented to Tim Burton's Corpse Bride for the innovation and technical use of stop-motion animation.

Representing a remarkable step forward in digital filmmaking, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride is a stop-motion animated feature film created through the innovative use of editing and camera technology. Based on a 19th century Russian folktale of a groom (voiced by Johnny Depp) who marries a zombie (Helena Bonham Carter) by mistake, this groundbreaking work features puppets made from stainless steel armatures covered by a silicon skin.
